Fishing derbies have been popular with the young and the young at heart for many years. Philmont’s fishing derby started in the 1970s as a way to involve youth in the sport of fishing and introduce them to one of nature’s entertainments.
The Fishing Derby wil l be held at Summit Lake. Also known as the Philmont Reservoir, this body of water was created to provide water power to the local fabric mills and as a back-up reservoir for drinking water. As the mills closed, the 17-acre lake remained and serves the community of Philmont as a recreational treasure today.
This year’s derby will be July 18, from 7 a.m. to noon. Kids from age 1 to 18 are welcome to participate and compete for a variety of prizes that have been donated by Stewarts Ice Cream Shops, Price Chopper, Col. Co. Sheriff’s Benevolent Assn., Columbia Tractor, Cabella’s Fishing Tackle, Shallo, Galluscia, Bianchi, and Fucito, Bobby Fisher, Philmont Fire Company, Loren Miller Creations, Ralph Hoag, Columbia Cruisers, Trout Unlimited, Anglers Marina, River Basin Sports Shop, Key Bank Philmont, Schraders Flooring, Bubba Bean, Speeds Garage, Main Street Public House, Michael Johnston’s Transportation, Tammy Johnston and Family, Danny Winters, TD Smith Stonemasonry, and several anonymous contributors.
In addition to fishing, activities for the day include:
-Ident-A-Kit, a program to help identify children, conducted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s office
-Bike safety clinic conducted by the Philmont Police Department
-Volleyball game with the Philmont Police Department
-93.5, The Cat, will be broadcasting from the reservoir from 10 to noon
The Philmont Public Library will be cooking “eggers,” beginning at 7 a.m. For those out of the loop, an egger is bacon, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. Later the gas grill will be fired up to cook hot dogs. Drinks will also be available. All food is free of charge.
See you at Lakeside Drive on July 18.
