The results of the fifth edition of the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service (LJI) are in and the Philmont Public Library is ranked in the top 262 libraries in the United States. The Philmont Public Library is only one of 111 libraries in the nation that has made the list for all five years since the Library Journal has compiling rankings. The Library Journal uses a measurement tool that compares U.S. public libraries on the quantities of services they deliver by circulation, program attendance, use of public computer terminals and attendance.
The Philmont Public Library is the only library in Columbia County to receive this honor and one of five "star" libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System (three with five stars and two with four). Philmont is able to maintain their star status annually by providing patrons and members of the community with star quality service through effective programs and services that meet the needs of the area, all while having one of the lowest operating budgets in Columbia County.
Karen Garafalo, director at Philmont for the last eight years, is "thrilled at receiving the honor again this year. We have a great community who support and make use of their library. Our patrons make our library a "star".
Stop in at the Philmont Public Library to see what a Star Library looks like. The library is open Monday and Wednesday from 12 to 5 and 6 to 8. Thursday from 10 to 2, Friday from 12 to 5 and Saturday from 10 to 2.
You can read more about the library survey at the Library Journal website.
